From a review by Doug Nelson www.retouchpro.com

An expression that has been used more than once in our Forums is "I wish I could look over an expert's shoulder while they work". Well, here's your chance to not only look over an expert's shoulder while they work, but that expert is Katrin Eismann. For anyone not familiar with Katrin, she's the author of the best book on photo restoration.

The Professional Photoshop Image Restoration & Repair DVD is based quite squarely on Katrin's book. In fact, the images she uses are mostly the same ones she uses in her book (they can be downloaded from her website so you can work along with her). The book goes deeper into the various techniques, and offers options that the time contraints of video don't allow.

That said, watching this video is a completely different experience from reading the book, even for the same examples. I've already praised Katrin's professional and non-destructive approach demonstrated in her book. What you can't judge from the book, and what is so dramatically demonstrated in the video, is the speed and efficiency of her techniques.

There is a lot of information here. She repairs over a dozen images in less time than you could work though one repair in her book. The pace is quite dazzling, and I was thankful for the rewind button. Plus there's no time wasted on basics. This is not a DVD for beginners. You're expected to know your way around Photoshop before you start.

My own acid test for any of my reviews is "did I learn anything?". You'd think this test would get harder and harder to pass as I review more and more things, but that's not the case. There's just too much to learn and remember. This video passed that test in the first 5 minutes. Besides the new information, there are a lot of techniques I've read about but never tried or fully understood. This video had many "ah-HAH!" moments for me as I finally understood quite a few of these techniques.

I had a lot of fun by pausing the DVD before she started on each image and thinking about how I'd approach it, then watching Katrin's take on the problem. I found it refreshing that only in one case did she use the same technique I'd have used.

Some of the coolest things I learned from this DVD weren't the subjects of any particular tutorial, but were simply from watching how someone completely at ease with Photoshop works with the various pallettes, windows, and menus. Photo editing is a very solitary activity, with only our own point of view to reference. Here is finally a fresh, and expert, point of view to compare with our own habits and techniques.
